The Department of Education (DepEd) in Bicol is preparing for the opening of classes for School Year 2026–2027 despite the ongoing effusive eruption of Mayon Volcano in Albay.
In a private message to the Inquirer on Monday (May 18), DepEd regional director Gilbert Sadsad said Brigada Eskwela would be held from June 1 to 5 in preparation for the opening of classes.
Sadsad said only one school in Albay remains occupied by Mayon evacuees.
“Only one school in Albay is being occupied by evacuees, Bariw Elementary School in Camalig town. The rest of the schools have tents built outside the school,” he said.
He added that negotiations are ongoing to transfer the evacuees to a vacant lot that may serve as an evacuation site.
Sadsad said there is also a possibility that temporary learning spaces may be used to ensure the continuity of classes.
DepEd said around 1.7 million learners were enrolled in Bicol during the previous school year.
