  • DepEd prepares for class opening in Bicol amid Mayon Volcano unrest

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Bicol is preparing for the opening of classes for School Year 2026–2027 despite the ongoing effusive eruption of Mayon Volcano in Albay.

In a private message to the Inquirer on Monday (May 18), DepEd regional director Gilbert Sadsad said Brigada Eskwela would be held from June 1 to 5 in preparation for the opening of classes.

Sadsad said only one school in Albay remains occupied by Mayon evacuees.

“Only one school in Albay is being occupied by evacuees, Bariw Elementary School in Camalig town. The rest of the schools have tents built outside the school,” he said.

He added that negotiations are ongoing to transfer the evacuees to a vacant lot that may serve as an evacuation site.

Sadsad said there is also a possibility that temporary learning spaces may be used to ensure the continuity of classes.

DepEd said around 1.7 million learners were enrolled in Bicol during the previous school year.

  • Visayas thunderstorms to persist; Iloilo, Negros heat index at 36°C

Warm and humid conditions will continue across most parts of the Visayas, with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms expected due to localized thunderstorms and easterlies, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas on Monday afternoon.

In its forecast valid from 5 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Pagasa said skies across the region will be partly cloudy to cloudy, with brief but possibly heavy thunderstorms likely to develop in the afternoon or evening.

Among the hottest areas in the Visayas on Tuesday are Iloilo and Negros Occidental, where temperatures may reach up to 36 degrees Celsius. Samar is also expected to hit 36°C, while Guimaras and Aklan may see highs of 35°C.

Cebu may record temperatures ranging from 27°C to 33°C, while Bohol could reach up to 33°C. In Eastern Visayas, Leyte and Southern Leyte are forecast to hit 34°C, while Eastern Samar may experience up to 33°C.

Pagasa advised the public to remain alert for sudden thunderstorms that may trigger flash floods or localized flooding, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.

  • Almost 24,000 aspiring principals join DepEd assessment

Nearly 24,000 aspiring school principals nationwide joined a simultaneous assessment conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd), to ensure that the country will be able to maintain a pipeline of future school leaders under its continuing education reform initiative.

In a statement on Tuesday, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said that the National Assessment for School Heads (NASH) seeks to expand the country’s pool of eligible school principals.

A total of 23,994 aspiring school leaders took part in the simultaneous nationwide examination held on May 17 across 65 designated testing centers.

“This assessment aims to strengthen school leadership capacity and expand the pool of qualified and eligible candidates for school principal positions,” Angara said.

“It is consistent with our reform direction toward the vision of ‘One School, One School Principal,” he added.

NASH is a key program aimed at developing a robust pipeline of competent and future-ready school leaders who can drive improvements in educational quality and institutional performance.

  • Resignation due to health issues, not over impeach vote

Former 1Tahanan party-list Rep. Nathaniel Oducado has clarified that health issues, and not his stand on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, prompted his sudden resignation from the House of Representatives.

In an ambush interview on Tuesday, Oducado relayed that his family has had a history of lung illness, and that he suffers from asthma. The former lawmaker also shared that he had felt lethargic in recent months, sparking concerns about his overall health.

“I have to take care of my health, and take care of my family,” Oducado told reporters inside the Batasang Pambansa complex. “My family has a lung history so I have asthma. And at the same time, I get tired easily these past few months.”

“It’s really a personal reason given my situation where I need to rest,” he added, noting that his decision was also hinged on the fact that his “kids are growing up.”

Oducado, a neophyte lawmaker, said his party is still discussing who will fill the spot he vacated.

“The party-list is still deliberating internally on who will replace me,” he said “But rest assured, it will undergo a process and my replacement will be capable.”
